What is a PCB DFM checklist?

A PCB DFM checklist is a structured pre-production review of the design files, board geometry, component data, assembly process, test access and release controls that may affect whether a PCB or PCBA can be built repeatedly as intended.

Project Data & Revision Control

Footprints, Pads & BOM

  • Does each manufacturer part number match the footprint and pin count?

Routing & Copper Geometry

  • Are nets connected without unintended open stubs or isolated copper?
  • Are approved width, spacing, copper-weight, current, and controlled-net requirements identified and compatible with the intended manufacturing process?
  • Are pad exits, via-in-pad features and acute geometry reviewed?
  • Is copper clear of holes, edges, slots, screws and routed profiles?
  • Are planes, thermal relief and return paths consistent with the design intent?

Bare-Board Manufacturability

  • Are line/space, annular ring, drill and aspect-ratio requirements identified?
  • Can solder mask openings and bridges be produced without unwanted exposure?
  • Is legend clear of pads, openings and critical identifiers?
  • Are board thickness, panelization and warpage risks considered?
  • Are surface finish, impedance coupons and inspection notes defined where required?

Assembly Process Access

  • Is the intended SMT, THT, selective, wave or reflow route clear?
  • Is there access for placement nozzles, soldering tools, fixtures and inspection?
  • Are fiducials, tooling features and panel rails adequate for the route?
  • Are moisture, gold removal, coating, masking or cleaning controls identified?
  • Can depanelization avoid unacceptable stress on nearby components?

Testability & Programming

  • Are test points provided for the nets that require manufacturing access?
  • Do test-point diameter, pitch and keep-out support the intended fixture or probe?
  • Are customer-approved power, ground, interface, and safety requirements provided for the intended test route?
  • Can connectors, LEDs, RF points and controls be reached or observed?
  • Are ICT, FCT, programming and customer acceptance inputs available?

Reliability & Production Release

  • Are thermal, vibration, environmental and service conditions identified?
  • Are mechanical stress risks near ceramic parts, BGA or connectors reviewed?
  • Are lifecycle status, alternates and change-authorization paths recorded?
  • Are inspection coverage and acceptance requirements agreed?
  • Are deviations, open items and final approvals linked to the released revision?
Release boundary: completing the checklist does not approve production. Final requirements are confirmed through review of the actual project files and the approved quotation.

PCB DFM Checklist Questions

These answers explain how to prepare for review. Project-specific limits and release conditions follow evaluation of the actual data.

What files are normally needed for a PCB DFM review?
Gerber or ODB++, NC drill data, a fabrication drawing and the intended stack-up are common starting inputs. For assembly review, add the BOM, XY or centroid data, assembly drawings and any test or programming requirements. Partial information can still be used to identify what is missing.
Is a DFM checklist the same as a full engineering review?
No. A checklist helps organize questions and expose obvious inconsistencies. A full review evaluates the actual construction, materials, tolerances, process route, machine access, inspection coverage and acceptance requirements for the project.
Should DFM be completed before requesting a quotation?
No, not necessarily. Use the checklist before sending files when practical, but do not delay contact because one input is missing. The available package can be reviewed first, and open items can be identified before the quotation is released.
Does passing automated DFM mean the PCB is ready for production?
No. Automated checks can flag selected geometry and data conditions, but they do not by themselves approve material selection, stack-up, assembly access, test coverage, customer acceptance or special process requirements.
What is the difference between PCB DFM, DFA and DFT?
PCB DFM focuses on fabricating the bare board. DFA considers component placement and assembly access. DFT considers programming, electrical or functional test access and coverage. A production-ready review may need all three.
Can EBest PCBA review only the bare PCB files?
Yes. The review scope can start with the available bare-board package. If assembly, component or test data later become part of the project, those inputs should be reviewed before the corresponding production route is released.
How are DFM exceptions handled?
The affected item, evidence and requirement should be recorded. The next action may be a file correction, clarification, engineering evaluation or approved exception. Closure should remain linked to the released project revision.
Can I request an NDA before sending project files?
Yes. Contact EBest PCBA before sending controlled project documents and state that an NDA is required. The review can begin after the NDA is in place.
