Manufacturing route selection

Choosing the Ceramic and Assembly Interface

Define heat flow, electrical isolation, operating environment, attachment and bonding requirements. We review the candidate material and process together rather than selecting a substrate independently of the conductor system.

01

Thermal path

Define heat density, operating environment, thermal cycling and the external heat-sink or package interface before selecting Alumina, AlN, ZTA or Si3N4.

02

Electrical isolation

Confirm voltage withstand, creepage, dielectric behavior and conductor-to-edge requirements together with substrate thickness and surface condition.

03

Conductor system

Fine patterned copper, thick copper, printed conductor paste and co-fired metallization follow different DPC, DBC, AMB, Thick Film, LTCC or HTCC routes.

04

Assembly interface

Soldering, wire bonding, die attach, component clearance, finish, flatness and inspection requirements must be defined before the board route is released.

FAQ

Ceramic PCB Manufacturing Questions

These FAQs cover common questions about ceramic PCB materials, manufacturing processes, surface finishes, quotations and assembly.

How do Alumina and AlN compare for selection?
Alumina is a common ceramic substrate option. AlN can be assessed for more demanding heat-flow requirements. Material grade, mechanical conditions, geometry, attachment and cost must be considered together.
How do DPC, DBC, AMB and thick film differ?
DPC uses patterned copper. DBC and AMB use different copper-to-ceramic bonding methods. Thick film uses printed and fired conductor pastes. Conductor thickness, geometry, substrate and assembly interface determine the suitable route.
Can thick-film ceramic circuits use copper?
Copper-based thick-film pastes exist, with specific firing and material requirements. Our thick-film references include Ag/Pd and Au/Pd systems. Copper-paste requirements need separate process and availability confirmation.
Can ceramic circuits include vias or multilayer structures?
Selected routes can support specific vias or multilayer constructions. Co-fired and post-fired routes use different methods. Send the layer map, hole definitions and conductor requirements for review.
Which finishes can be reviewed?
Finish availability depends on the conductor, ceramic process and soldering or bonding method. ENIG, ENEPIG, gold, OSP, silver or tin requirements are assessed for compatible constructions.
What files are needed for a ceramic circuit quote?
Send the drawing, available circuit data, material and process preference, conductor requirement, dimensions, quantity and assembly or inspection notes. Data format requirements depend on the selected process.
Can fabrication be combined with assembly?
Assembly can be reviewed as part of the project. Soldering, die attach and wire bonding are different operations. Send the BOM, drawings and process requirements so the available scope can be confirmed.
