What is the difference between SPI, AOI and X-ray inspection?

SPI measures solder-paste deposits before component placement. AOI uses optical imaging to check visible assembly features such as component presence, polarity and solder joints. X-ray is used when critical joints or features are hidden, including many BGA connections.

These methods address different risks and are often complementary. The inspection plan should match the package types, board design, production stage and customer acceptance requirements.
