X-ray is useful when critical solder joints are hidden or cannot be assessed adequately by optical inspection, including many BGA, QFN and bottom-terminated packages. The required sampling, views and acceptance criteria depend on package, process risk and project requirements. X-ray evidence complements solder-paste and process control; it does not by itself prove full product function.
