Controlled impedance is typically specified for signal paths whose electrical behavior depends on trace geometry and dielectric construction, such as high-speed digital, RF or other transmission-line designs. The design owner defines the target impedance and tolerance.
The PCB manufacturer then reviews stack-up, material properties, copper thickness and trace geometry and confirms a producible construction before fabrication.
